Python in Heliophysics Winter School 2027
The Python in Heliophysics Community (PyHC) is excited to announce its 2027 Winter School, set to take place Tuesday, January 5th to Friday, January 8th, 2027 at the University of Arizona in sunny Tucson, Arizona, USA.
This Winter School builds on the success of PyHC’s 2022 and 2024 Summer Schools, offering another deep dive into the rich ecosystem of Heliophysics Python packages, just in the winter this time! Open to undergraduate and graduate students, early career scientists, and anyone eager to deepen their understanding of Python in the Heliophysics and Space Weather disciplines, this program promises a mix of in-depth tutorials, engaging demos, and hands-on sessions, delivered by some of the field’s leading experts.
Remote options will be available for those unable to make the trip to Tucson, and the presentations will be recorded and streamed to PyHC’s YouTube channel. Further, in keeping with PyHC’s commitment to knowledge-sharing, this event is FREE for all attendees.

Registration
Registration for the PyHC 2027 Winter School is officially open! Registration is FREE for all attendees, for both in-person and virtual participation. In-person participation is limited to the room capacity. Register here by Friday, December 18th, 2026 at 11:59 PM MT for both in-person and virtual attendance.
Travel Support
Travel stipends are available to help up to 20 selected attendees attend the Winter School in person. Travel stipends will cover the entirety of an attendee’s travel needs (e.g., airfare, lodging, meal per diem, car rental) up to $2,270. Some of these costs will be paid up front with a reimbursement to the attendee after the winter school concludes. Due to sponsor restrictions, this travel support is limited to US citizens, green card holders, and international students attending a U.S. institution with a valid student visa.
Travel support applications will be vetted and approved by members of the Winter School planning committee. Applications will be scored on need (whether the travel grant strongly determines the applicant’s ability to attend onsite), career stage (student, post-doctoral, early career, or within 5 years of most recent degree given preference), and equity (ensuring travel funds are disbursed to multiple institutions, rather than focusing on large cadres from the same institution).

Hotel
The official recommended hotel is the Graduate by Hilton Tucson, located at 930 E 2nd St, Tucson, AZ 85719 — less than a 10-minute walk (about 0.4 miles) from the Student Union Memorial Center, where the Winter School will be held. We have reserved a block of rooms for Winter School attendees. The room block booking link expires on December 7th, 2026. After that date, guestrooms will be released back into the general inventory and will be sold at the prevailing rates.

Zoom Meeting Information
We will use Zoom for remote participation. Connection details will be sent via email to registered attendees.
Transportation
The recommended hotel, the Graduate by Hilton Tucson, is within walking distance of the Student Union Memorial Center — less than 10 minutes on foot.
Tucson International Airport (TUS) is approximately a 20-minute drive from the University of Arizona campus. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is roughly a two-hour drive away and served by shuttle services. Details on parking, campus access, and getting around Tucson will be posted here.
Official Language
The official language of the PyHC 2027 Winter School is English. Simultaneous interpretation is not provided. It is therefore expected that attendees are able to communicate in the English language.
Python Resources
You do not have to be a Python expert to attend. We will teach important Python best practices, but please use our Python Resources page to familiarize yourself with the basics if you have no prior experience with Python or Jupyter Notebooks, as those basics will not be taught.

Winter School Code of Conduct
We will follow the PyHC Code of Conduct for the PyHC 2027 Winter School (see here). Those who violate the code of conduct are subject to removal from the remainder of Winter School activities.
